5 Reasons Your AC Is Performing Poorly

AC RepairIf you’re like most homeowners, you depend on your HVAC system to keep your home interior comfortable, and you and other household residents really notice it when the air conditioning system isn’t functioning as it should. Unfortunately, most air conditioner problems seem to occur during seasonal heat waves, which is generally due to units having to work much harder when outdoor temperatures are high.

Following are five common problems that cause air conditioning systems to perform poorly.

1. Insufficient Maintenance

Units that have not been properly maintained often malfunction when they’re needed the most, so make sure to schedule maintenance on a regular basis — too many homeowners simply wait for their system to break down before they reach out for professional help. Filters that aren’t replaced or cleaned on a regular basis and coils that haven’t been cleaned are common culprits in air conditioner issues. Although they probably won’t cause your AC to break down, they’ll make it run harder than it should, resulting in wear-and-tear on the unit a well as increased utility costs.

2. Thermostat Problems

If your AC unit begins to behave erratically, coming on and shutting off at odd intervals, the culprit could be the thermostat sensor, so check to see if it’s somehow gotten knocked out of position. It’s located right next to the evaporative coil, and you can adjust its location by bending the wire that holds it in place.

3. Clogged Condensate Drain

If you live in an area where atmospheric humidity is part of the overall climate picture, you’ll need to check your AC unit’s condensate drain on a regular basis to ensure it hasn’t become clogged. A clogged drain will interfere with normal functioning.

4. Low Refrigerant Levels

Low refrigerant levels could indicate that the unit has developed a leak. Although it may be tempting to simply add more refrigerant, it’s best to let a trained technician handle the problem, especially since the system will probably need to be recharged.

5. Worn Out Electrical Components

If electrical components such as fan controls and the compressor are worn out, the system simply won’t turn on. A professional can check these and replace the parts, if necessary. This may also be a sign that your system is due to be replaced.
