Choosing the Right Mini Split System for Your Eugene, OR, Home

Mini-splits are among the most efficient HVAC systems on the market. They’re also a great choice for any home because there are few installation requirements. Let’s explore what you should know to choose the ideal mini-split for your home.

Cooling Only or Heating

While some mini-splits are air conditioners that only provide cooling, others are heat pumps that provide heating too. As you might imagine, a cooling-only mini-split will be the more economical option. That said, a mini-split heat pump still provides inexpensive heating compared to many alternatives. However, it’s important to remember that heat pump heating tends to be inefficient during the coldest nights. For that reason, many homeowners choose a mini-split with auxiliary electric heating or pair the system with a furnace or boiler.

Choosing the Number of Zones

Mini-splits allow you to have up to eight zones in your home. You’ll be able to set the temperature independently in each zone area. Single-zone mini-splits have a condenser unit that only supports one indoor air handler or head. That means you won’t be able to scale up the system later. Multi-zone systems can support one or multiple heads up to the system limit. Most of the prepackaged systems on the market come with two, three or four heads. For larger rooms, secondary units are also available that won’t cut into your upper limit.

Sizing Your Mini-Split

The industry rates the outdoor units based on the heat energy they can move measured in British thermal units (BTUs). Determining the BTUs you need can be complex, so we recommend consulting with a professional. The installer will perform a load calculation. It will account for the total cubic footage of your zones. It will also account for climate zone, your location, building envelope and so forth.

Installation Options

Wall-mounted heads are the most prevalent configuration and will usually be the least expensive. There are other options, and you can mix and match the configurations as needed for your home. Floor models are effective in rooms with limited clearance. Ceiling installations are an option as well. Cassette units allow for a flush installation and generally don’t require additional support. Suspended units are also an option but may require additional support that increases the installation costs.

SEER and HSPF

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) represents the cooling efficiency of a mini-split. The higher that number, the cheaper a mini-split will be to run over an entire summer. The heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) applies specifically to mini-split heat pumps. Units with higher efficiency ratings will cost more upfront. Discuss this with your installer to find the right balance between initial costs and long-term savings.

Rebates and Tax Credits

Another aspect to consider is the potential savings. The federal government offers rebates and tax rebates that may be available to you. There are also ENERGY STAR rebates that may be available through the manufacturer, your local utility company and other sources.

Remote Access and Control

If you have more than one indoor unit, an important consideration is how you’ll control them. Most brands include a remote for each head. Controlling multiple units with their separate remotes can be inconvenient. Consider a system with Wi-Fi capabilities. It will let you control all indoor units from one remote or even through another device, such as your smartphone.

Other Features to Consider

An integrated programmable or smart thermostat is a feature that will save you money over the life of the mini-split. Consider the air filter that the system uses, too. A filter with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 13 will provide better air quality. A self-cleaning mode will provide better air quality as well. Dry mode can improve comfort on humid days. Sensor-based airflow is also a great feature since it can automatically ensure whether air blows directly on you or not.
