Celebrating the Things That Make Springfield, Oregon Famous

At Jco Heating A/C Electrical, we work hard to provide this community with top-notch HVAC heating and cooling services. As a hometown company, we are proud of the things that make this city unique. Although other cities may be larger or more well-known, several features of Springfield make it a desirable place to live. Plus, we even have a few claims to fame that you may not know about. That’s why this article is all about taking pride in this fantastic city.

“The Simpsons”

While there are cities named Springfield in Illinois, Missouri, and many other states, the city that the TV show “The Simpsons” refers to is likely Springfield, Oregon. The show’s creator is originally from Oregon, and Springfield certainly fits the bill as a small, all-American city. The town celebrates this famous connection in multiple ways, with displays in the town’s visitor’s center, a giant mural prominently displayed in the heart of the city, and many more subtle nods to remind visitors and residents that Bart and the rest of the gang might be hanging out just around the corner.

Nike Shoes

While NIKE, Inc. is a large and powerful corporation today, the small city of Springfield is where this company got its start. What Bill Bowerman created as a running shoe using a waffle iron in a Springfield workshop has now become a worldwide phenomenon. You can find many references to this iconic brand’s history in Springfield and nearby Eugene. One local hotel even displays Nike shoes as part of the decor in its main lobby.

Murals

Art is an integral part of the culture of Springfield. Giant outdoor murals capture and celebrate unique aspects of the city’s history and legacy. In addition to the giant mural honoring “The Simpsons,” there’s also a mural that celebrates the spirit of adventure and exploration in the context of the Oregon Trail. If you’ve ever played the classic computer game and died of dysentery before reaching your destination, this mural will finally help give you some closure. A third popular mural celebrates Opal Whiteley, a famous former resident who wrote a best-selling book. These large public art displays testify to the importance that Springfield places on developing the arts in the city.

Nature

It would be hard to talk about Springfield without discussing the stunning natural beauty surrounding the city that we at Jco Heating A/C Electrical encourage you to experience. Clearwater Park surrounds part of the Willamette River and offers swimming, boating, fishing, and other water activities. There are also a number of hiking trails that allow you to experience the dense forests and abundant wildlife up close. Another famous natural feature in Springfield is Dorris Ranch. This natural wonder was the first hazelnut farm in Oregon and continues to produce hazelnuts today. The farm also used to run a hazelnut tree nursery that sent trees throughout the state. Today, approximately half of the hazelnut trees in the state can trace their genealogy back to this farm in Springfield.

A Friendly Rivalry With Eugene

This fun fact may not put Springfield on the map, but it’s certainly something the locals celebrate. With Springfield being very close to the larger city of Eugene, many of Springfield’s accomplishments often get credited to Eugene. One of the most well-known rivalries concerns the true birthplace of Nike shoes. Although the shoes were originally sold at the University of Oregon in nearby Eugene, the shoes were first made in a factory in Springfield. Typically, though, both cities work together to improve the lives of every citizen. While Eugene offers the amenities of a larger city, Springfield provides a small-town feel and stunning natural getaways. All in all, it’s a great match.
